Kang Yatse I & II Expedition

Kang Yatse is one of the most impressive and rewarding mountaineering objectives in Ladakh, rising dramatically above the vast landscapes of the Markha Valley. The mountain features two distinct summits — Kang Yatse II (6200m) and Kang Yatse I (6400m) — each offering a very different climbing experience.

Kang Yatse II, the lower western peak, is considered an ideal introduction to high-altitude mountaineering. While physically demanding due to altitude, it does not require advanced technical climbing skills, making it a natural progression for trekkers who have already completed high Himalayan treks.

Kang Yatse I, the higher eastern summit, is a far more serious undertaking. The final approach involves a narrow and exposed knife-edge ridge that demands strong technical ability, confidence on snow and ice, and prior mountaineering experience. This peak is recommended only for seasoned climbers with proper training.

The Kang Yatse expedition is most commonly approached via the iconic Markha Valley trek, starting from either Spituk or Chilling. This route allows for excellent acclimatization while passing through remote villages, high passes, and some of Ladakh’s most spectacular mountain scenery.
